Phillip Samuel (B.A. disability studies, Grad dip psych., MVAPP) is a Senior Registered Psychologist and Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist who is currently available to see patients via Telehealth. From Thursday July 2 Phillip will be available to see patients in person.
Phillip has a caring and empathetic style and believes that the internal world is experienced in therapy through rapport and trust. He has experience in treating adults and older adolescents (over the age of 16) who experience anxiety and depression. Additionally he has many years of experience with treating the impact of trauma, abuse and substance dependence. He is predominantly a psychotherapist using talking therapy to work through issues around attachment to rediscover how we process thought and emotion. Bringing to the surface past experiences creates an understanding of reactions and thoughts. This builds internal strength and resolve to move forward emotionally.
Phillip completed an initial degree in disability studies and then specialised in addiction whilst he completed an internship for psychologist registration. It was during his work in community health and addiction that he became interested in psychotherapy and undertook further formal study in this therapy technique. He has had experience in treating trauma, stress, anxiety, depression, substance dependence, eating disorders, chronic health including diabetes, attentional disorders, personality disorders and disassociative disorders.
Following his trainings Phillip worked in community mental health (including working with the department of corrections) and advocacy, moving to two major hospitals in addiction. For the last 10 years he has been in private practice. He believes in choice, empowerment and values respect, honesty and integrity.
Full registration with the AHPRA psychology board of Australia (registration number PSY0001127311) and Member of the Victorian Association of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists.
