Dr Terence Bartholomew

Senior Psychologist

BAppSci, GDipPsych, GDipCrim, M.A., MPsych(Clin), PhD (Melb), MAPS

Terry has 20 years of clinical experience but feels he’s always learning from his clients. He has worked in hospital, University, not-for-profit and private practice settings both in Australia and overseas. Terry prefers working with adults, couples or older adolescents, and has experience in the areas of relationship / work / psycho-legal difficulties and transitions, anxiety, family challenges, depression, trauma, identity struggles, men’s issues, self-harm, and substance use / addiction.

Terry has co-ordinated graduate psychology programs at numerous Australian and international Universities and, when not at MCPC, still teaches graduate units at University.

He has experience with a range of modalities. These include:

  • Brief Psychodynamic approaches
  • Functional Analytic Psychotherapy
  • Interpersonal Psychotherapy
  • Solution Focused therapy
  • Narrative Therapy
  • Schema Therapy
  • Emotion Focused therapy
  • Trauma Informed therapy
  • Gottman Relationship therapy
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Terry’s preference is to draw on these approaches as indicated by client and/or clinical factors, but to remain grounded in Psychoanalytic and Psychodynamic frameworks.

Terry sees the broad goal of most therapeutic work as providing a forum for the client to enhance their insight and understanding, and for this to contribute to a more value-consistent and satisfying life. His client-centred method begins with a collaborative process where short and longer term goals are arrived at, and his therapeutic process utilises rapport, support, validation, empathy, pattern recognition, shared problem solving, and challenge in order to help clients improve their situation, insight and coping abilities.
