Mary Raftopoulos is a Senior Registered Psychologist with a wise and respectful approach to working from a depth psychology perspective.
Mary joins MCPC after nearly 20 years of clinical practice and an abiding interest in human beings and their life stories. Mary’s clinical experience has been gained working in Melbourne, London and Vancouver, spanning a range of settings including, public health, education, the non-profit sector and private practice. She teaches workshops and presents at conferences in Australia and internationally on providing treatment to children and families who have experienced childhood trauma. Most recently, Mary worked as a Senior Psychologist at the Royal Children’s Hospital where, for 11 years, she provided assessment and treatment of children and families who had experienced child abuse. This role, together with a PhD that has explored the intergenerational transmission of trauma in the families of those raised in Children’s Homes/Orphanages, has given Mary a deep appreciation of the heroic effort it takes to live alongside a troubled childhood history.
Mary undertook her training in Psychology, Sandplay Therapy and Play Therapy after completing a degree in Law and studies in economics. She became the first internationally Certified Sandplay Therapist/Teacher in Victoria. Mary is a registered supervisor in all three disciplines. Her approach to psychotherapy draws from the gifts offered by depth and analytical psychology; her particular focus is on the psychological principles of C.G. Jung and the power of symbolism and imagination in activating the healing process inherent in every human being. Mary’s studies and clinical experience have taught her that, within each person there is an intrinsic wisdom; and untapped internal resources that cultivate one’s capacity to grow, learn and move towards living a more loving and authentic life.
